First Do No Harm.

Do Not Steal Light.
A conventional addition to the plan of the original house would steal light from existing rooms. So, our response to the request to add a master bedroom suite and a screened porch was to create a separate building for the additions. They connect to the house via a bridge, which contains the master bath and closets.

Do Not Steal Land.
The addition is angled toward one property line to leave as much of the site as possible for open space, and the post structure of the porch allows the garden to continue under the new room above.

Do Not Divide.
Once the master bedroom was taken out of the house, existing space was liberated for enlarged and now-open living spaces.
